Flamingo Cay Lighthouse Anchorage (south bay)
22° 52.8′ N · 75° 52.2′ W
A shallow bay just south of Flamingo Cay's abandoned lighthouse, the second choice when Two Palms is full, with an old wreck to snorkel and the cave close by.
Practical
ActiveCaptain: no hazards on approach; 15 ft shoaling to 5 ft about 75 ft off the beach. The bottom is scoured with no decent holding until you reach sand at about the 6.5-ft contour; the closer to the beach, the better the holding and the less swell. MV Privateer anchored in 12 ft near the south end with no coral nearby and exited the banks next day via Sloop Cut just to the south; a shallow bay nearby is rumoured to hold conch. Fishermen use the area heavily and warned one crew of big sharks.
Best for
Overflow anchorage and jumping-off point toward Cuba
Season
Dec–May; best Mar–May between fronts; leave or move to a front refuge before W–N winds
