Infanta Maria Teresa wreck (Bird Point)
24° 31.2′ N · 75° 33.9′ W · approximate
The remains of the Spanish armoured cruiser Infanta Maria Teresa, scuttled at the Battle of Santiago in 1898, refloated by the US Navy, then lost under tow and driven ashore between two reefs off Cat Island on 1 November 1898.
Practical
Coordinate approx: set offshore about 0.6 nm south-east of the GeoNames Bird Point land point, per Wikipedia's 'less than 1 nm south of Bird Point'. Coordinate is the GeoNames position for Bird Point; Wikipedia says the ship grounded less than 1 nm south of Bird Point and was rediscovered from the air in December 1999, so this is not the wreck's surveyed position. The Out Islands tourism board lists her (as 'Santa Maria Teresa') at 20-30 ft. Bird Point is on the island's exposed side, so dive only with local guidance and in calm weather. Treat it as a historic wreck: look, don't take.
