Bennett's Harbour (Pompey Rock) Anchorage

24° 33.9′ N · 75° 38.4′ W

A sandy cove tucked behind the rocky Pompey Rocks peninsula at Bennett's Harbour. It is the most comfortable easterly-weather anchorage on north Cat Island, with a long walking beach and a creek full of rays and turtles.

Practical

Enter from the west toward the centre of the harbour; small coral heads are easy to spot, and a shoal runs out from the rocky peninsula on the north side. Anchor behind the peninsula in 7-12 ft of soft sand with excellent holding. A boat rode out 25 kt NE here, and others three days of 25 kt E; little current swing. The southern end of the cove is protected from swell in N-E-S winds but nothing protects it from the west. There is room for 10-15 boats. Dinghy up Pigeon Creek on a rising tide, or ride the falling tide back down. Trash barrels are at the government dock, but there is no laundry and no public water. Fresh fish is sometimes sold at the government dock in the late afternoon (2018). Mailboat on Thursdays (2024). Car rental is available locally; the island's only gas is at New Bight, so plan to refill there.
