Pelican Cays Anchorage (behind Sandy Cay)

26° 24.1′ N · 76° 59.9′ W

The day anchorage on the west side of Sandy Cay inside Pelican Cays Land and Sea Park, used as the base to dinghy round to the Sandy Cay reef moorings.

Practical

Approach on the inside route north or south and turn east when just above the cay. 10-15 ft over sand, but a 2019 report found the sand scoured to thin sand over rock and could not set even at 10:1 - test your set. Exposed to swell funnelling through the cuts on either side of the Pelican Cays: rolly, best as a day hook; consider a stern anchor to hold the bow into swell if staying. In settled weather some boats anchor just off the reef. If rolling, move 4 nm south to Lynyard Cay or Little Harbour. No-take park. ActiveCaptain community reports date from 2011-2019, before Hurricane Dorian (Category 5, Sept 1, 2019) hit Abaco; re-check bottom, markers and businesses locally.
