Tilloo Cay Anchorage (Tilloo Pond)
26° 26.7′ N · 76° 59.4′ W
A long lee anchorage in the Sea of Abaco off Tilloo Pond, with a mangrove pond to snorkel, a picnic beach and the mile-wide shallow Tilloo Bank to the south that locals treat as a swimming pool.
Practical
Anchor in 7-8 ft, sand with thick grass patches - several reports of anchors skating on grass; dive or check the set. Protected from E winds and from E-S swell; in 20 kt E-ESE waves have been seen breaking over the low cay, so it is less snug in a big blow. A cable runs parallel to shore very near the plotted position - anchor closer in or farther out. Trail from the beach just south of Soap Point joins Tilloo Pond Road to the ridge and ocean view. Easy dinghy to White Sound (Elbow Cay). Weekend small-boat traffic. Tilloo Pond itself is the mangrove pond inside the cay (snorkel it from the dinghy); Tilloo is narrow enough here that private parcels run sea-to-sea from the pond to the Sea of Abaco and the Atlantic. ActiveCaptain community reports date from 2011-2019, before Hurricane Dorian (Category 5, Sept 1, 2019) hit Abaco; re-check bottom, markers and businesses locally.
Best for
E-wind overnight with beach walks and drift snorkels
Season
Nov-May; untenable in strong W-NW
