Memory Rock

26° 57.0′ N · 79° 6.2′ W

A lonely rock and light on the western rim of the Little Bahama Bank, about 17 nm NNW of West End, where the bottom climbs from 2,000 ft to 8 ft in under a mile. It is the classic landfall and turning mark for boats crossing from Lake Worth or Fort Pierce to Mangrove Cay and the Abacos, and a wahoo-trolling and spearfishing spot.

Practical

Light: Fl W 3s, 11 m, range 11 nm (Admiralty J4602), position from the Wikipedia lighthouse list. NOAA runs a tide prediction station 'Memory Rock' (TEC4619), a subordinate of Settlement Point. Wikipedia describes the rock as sticking out of 7-8 ft of water with excellent spearfishing for snapper, hogfish and lobster in the shallows. No anchorage or shelter; it has wrecked ships since at least the 1800s (HMS Bermuda in 1808). Fishing requires the permit included in your Bahamas cruising fee; spearfishing on scuba is illegal.
