Sandy Cay Anchorage (north of West End)

26° 48.4′ N · 79° 0.5′ W

A small, deserted, beach-fringed cay about 8 nm north of the Old Bahama Bay entrance, once a naturist camp; only a few old dock pilings remain. The anchorage off its northeast corner is a handy last or first night on the bank for boats crossing to or from Florida via Memory Rock.

Practical

Position is the Waterway Guide anchorage listing (N 26 48.411 / W 079 00.540), off the northeast corner of the cay. Depth 6 to 8 ft; tidal range 2 to 2.5 ft; good holding in sand; mild current. Only marginal protection from the south and exposed in all other directions, but reasonably calm in prevailing easterlies (listing says protection E to SE). The waters around the cay are shallow: watch the state of the tide when choosing your spot. No structures or services ashore; beach landing by dinghy. Fair cell coverage. Not a port of entry: clear in at Old Bahama Bay.

Best for

Staging for a Gulf Stream crossing or a first night on the Little Bahama Bank

Season
