West End Anchorage (north of the Old Bahama Bay breakwater)

26° 42.3′ N · 78° 59.8′ W · approximate

The closest anchoring spot to the Old Bahama Bay entrance: a small pool of deeper water just north of the marina's north breakwater, tucked inside Indian Cay. Useful if you arrive late, want to wait for a weather window across the bank, or the marina is full.

Practical

Position is derived: placed about 0.1 nm north of the marina entrance jetties toward Indian Cay, from the Bahamas Cruisers Guide description; it is not a published fix, so sound your way in on Explorer Chart GB-1/GB-2. The guide (2012) describes limited space in the 'outer harbor' and boats also anchoring 'in a small pool of deep water just N of the N breakwater of the marina entrance'. Open to the west and to any swell running in the Gulf Stream; untenable in a norther. Clear in at the marina first (dinghy in to the dock). For better protection, the Ginn Sur Mer canal 3 nm SE is the calmest anchorage at this end of the island (Waterway Guide); Sandy Cay, 8 nm N, is a settled-weather staging stop.

Best for

A late-arrival or weather-wait anchorage before heading onto the Little Bahama Bank

Season

Settled weather only; exposed W and in northerly swell
