Watersport· Exuma Cays

Sanctuary Creek, Shroud Cay

24° 32.2′ N · 76° 47.7′ W · approximate

The one mangrove creek at Shroud where outboards are permitted - a serpentine, waist-deep river of glass that cuts clean through the island from the bank to Exuma Sound, past turtles, baby lemon sharks, rays and conch you can count on the bottom. It is the single most memorable dinghy ride in the Exumas.

Practical

IDLE SPEED ONLY, strictly enforced - this is a nursery habitat. Time it for a mid-to-high RISING tide; at low water the creek dries and you will drag your dinghy. Roughly an hour before slack high is the sweet spot, giving you a push in and enough water to get back. Carry a handheld VHF and water; it is a long walk back. Other Shroud creeks are non-motorised (kayak/paddleboard only).
