Driftwood Beach / The Washing Machine, Shroud Cay
24° 31.9′ N · 76° 46.6′ W · approximate
The wide Atlantic-side beach where Sanctuary Creek spills out, and where the outgoing tide funnels through a gap to create a natural jacuzzi locals call the Washing Machine - drop in at the top and let the current spin you out onto the sand.
Practical
The current runs on the EBB; ride it out, never try to swim back against it. Only do this with the dinghy anchored downstream and a spotter. Uncomfortable-to-dangerous on a big ebb or with swell running in the Sound. Excellent picnic and snorkel beach at any state of tide. No facilities, no shade beyond the dune line.
Best for
Natural lazy-river ride and a picnic beach
