Camp Driftwood Lookout, Shroud Cay

24° 31.9′ N · 76° 46.6′ W · approximate

A short, steep scramble from the Sound-side beach to a rocky knob with a 360-degree view over the mangrove maze, the bank and the deep blue of Exuma Sound. Built up with driftwood by a hermit named Ernest Scholtes in the 1960s and later, legend has it, used by the DEA to watch Carlos Lehder's operation at Norman's Cay.

Practical

Beach the dinghy at the eastern end of Sanctuary Creek and follow the marked path - about a half-mile round trip, 15-20 minutes up. Sharp weathered limestone: closed-toe shoes, not flip-flops. No shade at the top; go early or late. Take nothing, leave nothing (park no-take rules cover driftwood too).
