St Vincent Security Advisory (boardings and dinghy theft)

13° 15.9′ N · 61° 15.7′ W · approximate

St Vincent's leeward anchorages and the south-coast bays have a long record of dinghy theft, night-time boardings and occasional violent crime. A cruising couple went missing from the catamaran Simplicity, found off Wallilabou in February 2024.

Practical

Coordinate is Cumberland Bay (approx), one of the bays Noonsite singles out. Noonsite (security page updated Sept 2026): be vigilant at Cumberland Bay and Chateaubelair, and extra vigilant in all west-coast anchorages; Kingstown has seen rising gang violence (37 murders nationwide by September 2026). CSSN's 2025 annual report records 12 SVG incidents, up from 7, including single incidents at mainland St Vincent anchorages, and 2 of the region's 7 violent crimes. Precautions: lift, chain and lock the dinghy and outboard every night; use a GPS tracker rather than a Bluetooth tag; lock hatches when ashore and when sleeping; keep deck lights on; anchor near other boats; and report incidents to CSSN and dial 911. The SVG Coast Guard's Waterway Watch advice: use only certified water taxis, remove boarding ladders, and keep a watch in lonely anchorages.
