Cumberland Black-Sand Beach

13° 15.9′ N · 61° 15.6′ W · approximate

A palm-lined black-sand beach at the head of jungle-walled Cumberland Bay, with brightly painted fishing boats, a river mouth and the national park's beach facilities.

Practical

Coordinate is derived (approx): a node on the OpenStreetMap coastline at the head of the bay, next to Cumberland Beach Recreational Park. The National Parks authority calls it a peaceful, beautiful beach popular for swimming and picnics; the park is open 8am to 6pm, with restrooms (US$1), showers (US$3) and laundry. The black sand shelves away fast, which is why yachts lie stern-to the palms (Running Tide, 2014). Swim clear of the stern lines and of the river mouth after heavy rain.

Best for

A swim and picnic ashore from the Cumberland anchorage

Season

Nov-May; north-west swell can break on the beach
