Sandy Island Moorings

12° 29.0′ N · 61° 28.9′ W · approximate

Park mooring balls in turquoise water off Sandy Island, a short hop from Tyrrel Bay or Hillsborough. A popular lunch stop and, in settled weather, an unforgettable night under the palms.

Practical

Coordinate is about 180 m off the islet's southern shore, derived from the OpenStreetMap islet outline (approx). Take a park ball rather than anchoring: anchoring is prohibited here (Noonsite, Feb 2025). Mooring fee EC$25 (US$10) a night, paid to the ranger (verify locally). Check every ball and its pennant; noforeignland reviewers (2026) say balls are easy to pick up but some lines chafe. Exposure: a 2010 cruiser log describes nights gusting over 30 knots with boats dragging onto the reef, and noforeignland reviewers note wind and swell can make it uncomfortable. It is best as a day stop or in settled trades, and untenable in a northerly swell. A quick-flashing red light (Q R) on the reef at the island's east end is charted (OpenStreetMap seamark). There are no facilities on the island; carry out all rubbish.
