Sandy Island (Carriacou)
12° 29.1′ N · 61° 28.9′ W
A picture-postcard ribbon of white sand about 150 m long, with a few young palms, ringed by reef and electric-blue water off Hillsborough Bay. Snorkel off the beach, walk the whole island in five minutes, and watch the sunset behind Mabouya.
Practical
Coordinate is the OpenStreetMap islet centroid. Pure Grenada calls it about 150 m long and five minutes by boat from Paradise Beach, with a natural shallow pool and turtles. It lies inside the Sandy Island/Oyster Bed MPA, so take only photos and remove all rubbish (rangers' plea, 2018). Land the dinghy on the sand, away from swimmers and coral. Water taxis run from Paradise Beach and Hillsborough for crew without a dinghy (Pure Grenada says to book through local guides or the Carriacou tourism office). Snorkelling is best on the reef either side of the island in calm conditions. There is a mooring field off the island (see Sandy Island Moorings).
Best for
Signature beach and snorkel stop of Grenada's Grenadines
Season
Calmest Nov-Jun; swell can wrap round in northerly swell events
