Sandy Island Snorkel

12° 29.2′ N · 61° 28.9′ W · approximate

Shallow reef and clear water around the postcard-perfect sand cay off Paradise Beach, with a knee-deep inner pool for beginners and a chance of turtles. Dive Carriacou calls it its favourite place to snorkel.

Practical

Coordinate is approx: in the water about 90 m off Sandy Island's north shore (from the OpenStreetMap coastline), near the Sandy Island Garden reef; snorkel right around the cay. Carriacou.biz describes a lagoon where you can snorkel in knee-deep water, with coral reefs around the island and quiet water and beach on its south side. Pure Grenada mentions a natural shallow pool and a chance of turtles. From a yacht, take an MPA mooring (no anchoring) and swim or dinghy in. Without a boat, a water taxi runs from Paradise Beach: Dive Carriacou says to ask for the Sandy Island ferry at the Paradise Beach Club bar, and Caribbean Beat names the Hardwood Bar's water taxi. Dive Carriacou rents mask, snorkel and fins for US$35 a day (2025, US$100 cash deposit). Watch for dinghy and water-taxi traffic off the beach, and don't stand on coral.
