The Bight Mooring Field (Norman Island)

18° 19.0′ N · 64° 37.1′ W

Norman Island's big, steep-sided harbour on the west side of the island: one of the most protected anchorages in the BVI and the classic first or last night of a charter, with Pirates Bight on the beach, the Willy T floating bar in the bay and the Caves around the corner.

Practical

Position is the OpenStreetMap 'The Bight' bay node. Coast Pilot 5 (2026): excellent anchorage, steep-to shores, good holding; open to the northwest but St John blocks any sea; Ringdove Rock (2 fathoms, about 300 yards west of Norman's northwest point) is the only danger entering; winds in the lee are baffling, so sailing vessels may need to motor in. Pirates Bight says the Bight has over 100 guest moorings; its moorings rent for US$50 per night (2026 website), take boats up to 60 ft, are first-come first-served at the restaurant (hail Pirates Bight on VHF 16 or call 284-443-1305), and checkout is 11 am. Moorings can also be reserved ahead on Dockwa (Norman Island Moorings; reviews 2025 mention numbered balls and a 'reserved' tag) and BoatyBall reservations were also reported; an attendant comes round to collect. A 2025 marinas.com review reported two balls off the restaurant needing repair, so inspect the pennant. The Moorings (2026) notes you may anchor outside the mooring fields in the northeast or southeast parts of the Bight. No fuel, water or provisioning in the Bight. Dinghy dock at Pirates Bight. Noonsite (2018) warns anchoring spots are hard to find.
