Koh Palai (Ko Bulo) Light

6° 30.3′ N · 99° 10.7′ E

A steep granite islet at the south end of the Butang group carrying the Ko Palai light — the landmark for the soft-coral moorings around Koh Palai and Koh Sawang.

Practical

Position: OpenStreetMap islet 'Ko Bulo' (alternate name Ko Palai, เกาะปะลัย). The light, from US NGA Pub. 112 via OpenStreetMap, is at 6.49922, 99.17961 on the neighbouring islet: Fl(2) W 12s, 49 m, 10 nm range. Southeast Asia Pilot: day anchorage and moorings around Koh Palai and Koh Sawang, generally the best snorkelling, diving and fishing in the group; the bottom rises sharply from more than 25 m, so approach slowly and pick up a mooring rather than anchor. Day stop only; untenable in SW swell. Inside Mu Ko Tarutao National Park: no fishing or anchoring on coral, park fee applies.

Best for

Navigation mark and day-mooring snorkel

Season

Nov–Apr; park closes the outer islands in the SW monsoon
