Kantang and Trang River Approaches

7° 15.0′ N · 99° 28.6′ E

The buoyed approach to the Trang River and Kantang, Trang's working fishing port and the province's original capital, with an old-style shipyard for hardy yachts.

Practical

Southeast Asia Pilot: the approach is marked, with the entrance south of Koh Talibong (Koh Libong). Use chart 336, or follow a large fishing boat into the estuary and harbour; favour the west side, which is well buoyed. Shallow-draft boats can also enter from the west, north of Libong, at high tide, but not at night, when work-barge lights are easily confused with channel markers. Safe anchorage in shallow water is possible anywhere in the passage off the mainland north of Libong. Kantang is 'more a work venue than a leisure destination', with an excellent shipyard described as 'decidedly ethnic and only for the hardier yachts' and a fast-ferry jetty at the Taaverlarp fishing company. The town has a hospital, fuel stations and the end of the Andaman railway line (Wikipedia). The waypoint is the Pilot's Kantang position.
