Hin Daeng

7° 9.1′ N · 98° 49.3′ E

Red Rock: a lonely pinnacle covered in red soft coral, rising from about 70 m in the open Andaman Sea. It is one of Thailand's top dives for manta rays, whale sharks and big schools of pelagic fish.

Practical

Southeast Asia Pilot puts it about 12 nm WSW of Koh Rok. Lanta Diver: speedboat about 1.5 hours from Lanta, depths 10-40 m with drop-offs beyond 60 m, visibility 10-30 m, medium to strong and sometimes challenging current; descend and ascend on a line. Advanced Open Water or deep-dive experience is required. Giant mantas use the cleaning stations here (Wikipedia's manta-ray photos were taken at Ko Hin Daeng), and whale sharks visit. There is no anchorage in the open sea; it is a dive-boat trip, and only flat calm makes a yacht visit sensible. Park fee payable; open with the park season. Wikivoyage's Diving in Thailand notes the Mu Ko Lanta National Marine Park oversees the mooring lines at these sites; there are no yacht moorings, and dive boats tie to the park lines. Hin Daeng drops to about 50 m on its south side; Hin Muang is a reef about 200 m long and under 20 m wide with three main pinnacles, dropping past 60 m. Speedboats from Lanta take about 1-1.5 hours, slow boats 3-4 hours. Wikivoyage lists the marine park fee at 200 THB per foreigner (date not stated, verify locally).
