Providence Island Anchorage (West Side)

9° 13.6′ S · 51° 1.0′ E · approximate

An exposed deep-water roadstead off the west side of Providence Island, at the north end of a 44 km reef, about 382 nm SW of Victoria.

Practical

Pub. 171 (2010): the most convenient anchorage is in 35 m, sand and coral, with the village boathouse bearing about 119° and the N extremity of the island about 046°; depths shoal very rapidly. The island manager reported better anchorage in 22 m, 0.1-0.2 nm farther S. It is free of much swell in the SE trades but exposed to the wind. Currents here set N for about 9 hours at about 1.5 knots (from 3 hours before HW to LW), then SSW for about 3 hours. In January-February, when NW winds blow, anchor E of the island. The island has been uninhabited since Cyclone Bondo (December 2006); an IDC airstrip now serves fishing and defence-force visits. The light on the NE end has been reported inactive since 2005. Wizard Reef, N of the island, breaks heavily. Coordinate is approximate, plotted from the Pub. 171 bearings using the Wikipedia village position and the OpenStreetMap outline.
