Spieden Island (from the water)

48° 37.9′ N · 123° 8.6′ W · approximate

A long, bare-sided private island north of San Juan Island where exotic game animals were released in the 1970s and 1980s. Mouflon sheep and fallow and sika deer can still be seen on the grassy south slope from a boat in Spieden Channel. There is no public landing.

Practical

Position is the OSM Spieden Channel label, south of the island; view from the water only. The island is privately owned. Spieden Channel has heavy tide rips and eddies where the floods from Haro Strait and San Juan Channel meet; the Coast Pilot does not recommend it for sailing craft. Danger Shoal (6 ft, 1.8 m) lies in the west fairway with a lighted buoy; Center Reef, which bares, is south of Spieden Bluff.
