Anchorage· East Redonda· Salish Sea — San Juans, Gulf Islands & Desolation Sound
Pendrell Sound (East Redonda Island)
50° 15.1′ N · 124° 43.4′ W
A long fjord cutting north into East Redonda Island off Waddington Channel. It is famous for the warmest sea swimming on the coast and is the main source of wild seed oysters in BC. Strings of shell hang from floats in the sound to catch oyster spat.
Practical
Coordinate is the OSM centre of the sound. Cruising guides give summer surface water above 20 C (68 F); one boat logged 24 C (75 F) in August 2019. The favoured anchorage is at the head of the sound, stern-tied to trees; it is deep and steep, so make sure the anchor is set. A second spot lies on the west shore about three-quarters of the way up, behind a small islet at a lagoon outlet, through a gap about 15 m (50 ft) wide between reef fingers. Charts 3541 and 3312. Keep well clear of oyster floats and spat strings. No services. Bring gloves and shoes for scrambling ashore with stern lines.
