Mexcaltitán Day Trip
21° 54.3′ N · 105° 28.5′ W
A tiny oval island-town in the Marismas Nacionales lagoons, under 400 m across and reached only by boat. Its streets flood in the rainy season, it is said to be the legendary Aztlán from which the Mexica set out for Tenochtitlán, and it's famous for its shrimp.
Practical
Not reachable by yacht. Go overland from San Blas: Mexcaltitán is about 118 km north (just over an hour from Santiago Ixcuintla), then take a 15-minute panga from the mainland landing. See the Museo del Origen (9 am–6 pm) and eat shrimp tamales and pescado zarandeado at La Camichina or Sandro. Shrimp season is busiest May–August. Hotel Ruta Azteca is the only hotel on the island. Coordinate is from Wikipedia.
