Isla Monserrat North Anchorage (Yellowstone Beach)

25° 42.6′ N · 111° 2.7′ W

Off 'Yellowstone'—Playa Amarilla, the yellow cliffs and beach at Isla Monserrate's north end—where Blue Pacific's rally fleet rafted up for a sunset happy hour and an easy arroyo walk leads inland.

Practical

Coordinate is the anchored position (25°42.553'N, 111°02.735'W) logged by the yacht BlueJacket in June 2012, on the west side of Yellowstone Beach in 18 ft over sand with good holding; checked in-water against the OpenStreetMap coastline. Swell can wrap round from both sides and roll the boat 5-10 degrees even when only about 6 inches high; BlueJacket moved to the east corner of the anchorage, which was calmer. SAIL calls it 'a fairly open roadstead'—fine for lunch or a calm night, but have Agua Verde as a bolt-hole if the wind fills in; leave if northerlies are forecast. Ashore: an arroyo with a pea-gravel floor runs about half a mile inland, and the Playa Amarilla trail (0.9 km) follows the cliffs to the 'Mirador Ballena Azul' blue-whale lookout. Non-biting flies can be a nuisance (2024 Baja Rally). The island is 200 m high and uninhabited, with an endemic whiptail lizard. CONANP protected-area fee applies: a Loreto Bay National Park day pass (bracelet) was MX$215 per person in 2025, and the annual Conservation Passport (MX$3,620 in 2025) covers every federal protected area; buy online at descubreanp.conanp.gob.mx or from the rangers at La Dársena in Loreto, and carry proof aboard.
