Bahía Candeleros Anchorage

25° 43.4′ N · 111° 14.2′ W

The big open bight under Punta Candeleros, south of Puerto Escondido, with almost a mile of soft sand, a resort ashore and a view of the Candeleros pinnacles and Isla Danzante.

Practical

Coordinate is the anchored position (25°43.39'N, 111°14.2'W) logged by the yacht BlueJacket in April 2012—about 15 ft over sand with good holding—in the bight west of Punta Candeleros (OpenStreetMap 25.72585, -111.22513), where the resort community GeoNames calls 'La Danzante' stands ashore (corrected from an earlier estimate that placed the anchorage 3 km further north-west). The same bight is charted as Ensenada Blanca, so the two names overlap. Almost a mile of soft beach; BlueJacket preferred the beach west of the hotel. The Cruising Club of America (2024) rates it a large bay with good protection except from north winds and swell, and occasional westerly Coromuels. The resort has welcomed cruisers who buy food or drink (2012 and 2017 reports—verify locally). A cautionary tale: in a big summer chubasco (2014) boats at Candeleros Bay saw 50-knot gusts—while Puerto Escondido had 35-38—and one anchored sailboat dragged onto the rocks (Latitude 38). Use it only in settled weather and run for Puerto Escondido when a chubasco or norther is forecast. Watch for Piedras del Camaroncito, pinnacles about 3 ft below the surface near Ligüí where the 173-ft VIXIT grounded in 2022 (Latitude 38). Loreto Bay National Park fees apply.
