Bahía Willard Anchorage (Gonzaga)

29° 49.1′ N · 114° 24.1′ W · approximate

A nearly landlocked inner bay at the north end of Bahía San Luis Gonzaga, closed off by Isla San Luis Gonzaga and Punta Willard — the northern Baja coast's best natural shelter between San Felipe and Bahía de los Ángeles, and a recognised summer storm refuge.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: a point mid-bay, derived from the OpenStreetMap coastline (Punta Willard node 29.8274 N, 114.3947 W; Isla San Luis Gonzaga to the east). The bay is roughly 1 km across with its entrance on the north side, about 0.7 km wide between Punta Willard and the north tip of Isla San Luis Gonzaga (measured from OSM). No published depths or bottom type in the sources we could open — sound your way in on a rising tide and expect shoaling toward the estero on the south side. Club Cruceros lists Willard Bay as a possible hurricane hole and as one of the northern storm shelters (with Puerto Don Juan, San Carlos, San Felipe and Puerto Peñasco); The Log calls it 'lighted Willard Bay'. The Gulf's tidal range grows toward the Colorado delta (San Felipe sees about 7 m), so allow generous scope and check swing room at low water. Ashore: Alfonsina's eco-hotel and restaurant (8 am to 8 pm) with an airstrip beside it (OSM), kayak and paddleboard rental, and help hiring a panga. Fuel only by road (Pemex closed at Puertecitos; the next road gas is at San Luis Gonzaga on MEX-5) — arrive with what you need.
