Shirley Heights Lookout

17° 0.1′ N · 61° 45.3′ W

A restored military lookout and gun battery about 490 ft above English Harbour, with the classic postcard view of English and Falmouth Harbours. The Sunday-evening steel-band and barbecue party is an Antigua institution.

Practical

Sunday party runs 4 pm to 10 pm (tourism board): steel pan at sunset, then a band; a Thursday party now runs as 'Reggae Heights'. Reviews on the venue's own site cite a US$10 admission per person (verify locally); food and drinks are extra. Reservations: reservations@shirleyheightslookout.com. From the anchorage, walk up the Lookout Trail from Galleon Beach (steep, rough, best early morning or toward sunset in the heat) or take a taxi up the road; most people taxi back down after dark. Built from 1781 under Governor Sir Thomas Shirley; part of the UNESCO site. Watch for the green flash at sunset.
