Galleon Beach

17° 0.3′ N · 61° 45.6′ W

A white-sand beach on Freeman's Bay at the mouth of English Harbour, between the Galleon Beach resort and The Inn at English Harbour, with a big old anchor on the sand and the Pillars of Hercules trail at its southern end.

Practical

Dinghy in from the Freeman's Bay anchorage; also reached by water taxi or by car. Entry is gently shelving and sandy from the anchor along to The Inn; elsewhere there is a rocky ledge and the occasional sea urchin. Good snorkelling off the reef; a couple of resident turtles and a stingray (Antigua Marine Guide). The beach is a sea-turtle nesting site (Wikipedia). The Inn's beach restaurant, The Reef, is open for lunch; The Cheeky Marlin beach bar at Galleon Beach Resort usually opens in high season. A path from the south end joins the National Parks hiking trails (Lookout Trail to Shirley Heights).

Best for

A swim and lunch ashore from Freeman's Bay; starting the Shirley Heights hike
