Ilet a Cabrit Fort Josephine Hike

15° 52.4′ N · 61° 35.7′ W

A scramble up uninhabited Ilet à Cabrit to the ruins of Fort Joséphine (built 1777 as Fort de la Reine), later a penitentiary, women's prison and a stop for convicts bound for Cayenne, with a lazaretto added in 1871.

Practical

Position is the Pénitencier du Fort Joséphine ruins (OSM). The islet is 0.45 km2, highest point Morne Joséphine about 85-90 m (Wikipedia). Land by dinghy from the Cabrit moorings; Fort Joséphine is one of the commune's listed hiking circuits; the tourism board describes a 15-minute ride by saintoise from the port. Paths are rough and unshaded - closed shoes and water. Remains of other batteries (Pointe à Cabrit, Anse à Chaux, Pointe Bombarde) ring the islet (OSM).
