Pain de Sucre Snorkel (Les Saintes)

15° 51.9′ N · 61° 36.0′ W

Snorkel along the foot of the Pain de Sucre, where basalt organ-pipe columns drop into clear water over corals, sponges and gorgonians - the archipelago's best-known shore snorkel, right beside the mooring field.

Practical

Position is the Pain de Sucre dive-site node in OpenStreetMap. The dive centre describes a drop-off to 20 m max with scree and seagrass at its base, rich sessile life and Caribbean reef fish (a large octopus photographed in tube sponges). Swim from the boat or land on the little Plage du Pain de Sucre (the hotel has let cruisers use its dock). Watch for dive boats and dinghy traffic. The bay and sugarloaf are a protected site (classified 1991): no anchoring on coral, do not touch.
