Christena Wreck

17° 12.2′ N · 62° 38.9′ W

The government ferry that capsized half a mile off Nags Head on 1 August 1970 with the loss of 233 lives - the federation's worst disaster, sitting upright on sand at 50-73 ft.

Practical

Coordinates from Wikipedia. The wreck is a grave site: bodies were left entombed. Dive Nevis lists it (top about 50 ft, bottom 73 ft; barracuda, rays, morays, turtles) but says it is not currently diving the site. A memorial stands on the Charlestown waterfront. Treat with respect; do not enter or remove anything.

Best for

Remembrance; diving only if an operator offers it
