Shitten Bay Reef

17° 13.4′ N · 62° 39.6′ W · approximate

A cliff-backed cove on the southwest face of the Southeast Peninsula, reachable only by sea, where volcanic rock, sea fans and sponges shelter turtles, rays and schooling reef fish - the main stop for the St Kitts snorkel catamarans.

Practical

Position is approximate - inshore of the ActiveCaptain Shitten Bay anchorage position, along the reef under the cliffs. Boat or dinghy access only; there is no road. The moorings belong to tour operators - do not pick one up; anchor in sand off the reef or come by dinghy from White House Bay. Holland America's excursion lists turtles, eagle rays, stingrays, chub, snapper, angelfish, parrotfish and squirrelfish here; The Trip Verdict reports often-clear water and intact coral. Expect catamaran groups late morning on cruise-ship days; go early. Exposed to southwest and northerly swell.
