Anguilla Summer Festival Boat Racing

18° 12.0′ N · 63° 5.6′ W · approximate

Boat racing is Anguilla's national sport: open, locally built racing sloops with huge sail plans, crewed by village teams, race around the island's bays during Summer Festival (Carnival), with crowds lining the beaches and following in boats.

Practical

Coordinate approx: Sandy Ground beach (OpenStreetMap way 532664489), where the August Monday J'ouvert parade ends; race courses and venues vary by event. 2026: Summer Festival ran 10 July to 9 August (dates given vary by source). August Monday was 3 August: J'ouvert from 5am to 10am from The Valley to Sandy Ground, then the Sir Emile Gumbs Boat Race from about midday. Class A and Class B schedules are published each year by the Anguilla Festival Development Committee (+1 264-497-3792). Races also run at other times of year. If you are anchored on a race day, keep well clear of the courses and the spectator fleet. Late July-August is also peak hurricane season, so balance the spectacle against weather risk.
