Kanoni & Pontikonisi (Mouse Island)

39° 35.2′ N · 19° 55.1′ E

The most photographed view in Corfu: from Kanoni hill you look down on the white monastery of Panagia Vlacherna on its causeway and, beyond it, Pontikonisi — Mouse Island — topped by a small Byzantine chapel of Christ Pantokrator. Planes land right past it at the airport behind.

Practical

Coordinate is Pontikonisi islet (OpenStreetMap); Vlacherna monastery is at 39.58995, 19.91714 on a 300 m walkway from Kanoni (Greeka). Small local boats run from Vlacherna to Mouse Island in about 5 minutes (Greeka). The chapel is dated 11th–12th century (Wikipedia); its feast is 6 August (Greeka). Some of the ashes of Gerald and Margaret Durrell were scattered on the island (Wikipedia). Visiting yachts can view it from the water off Kanoni in settled weather; the lagoon behind the causeway is shallow.
