Prasonisi (kite/windsurf)
35° 53.0′ N · 27° 45.7′ E
Rhodes' southern tip: a sand tombolo joining Prasonisi ('green island') to the mainland, with the Aegean on one side and the Mediterranean on the other. The steady wind makes it one of Europe's great kite and windsurf spots.
Practical
Wikipedia: the Aegean side has waves for advanced riders, the Mediterranean side flat water for beginners; busiest in July–August; rentals, tavernas and rooms are seasonal. In winter or in meltemi storms the sandbar can flood and the peninsula becomes an island. Anchoring (Sailing Issues): either side of the sandbar in 3–5 m over sand. The north side is good in southerlies, the south side adequate in a NW meltemi. The island is ringed by dangerous reefs. Natura 2000 site; loggerhead turtles used to nest here, so keep off any marked nests.
Best for
Kitesurfing and windsurfing
Season
Wind sports best in the meltemi months (June–September); sandbar can flood in winter
