Mastichari Harbour (Kos)

36° 51.1′ N · 27° 4.6′ E

A tranquil ferry port on Kos's north-west coast, safe in a north-westerly meltemi and ten minutes by taxi from the airport, ideal for crew changes.

Practical

Room for only 5-7 cruising yachts. Go stern-to the north quay between the day-tripper boats (west) and the ferry dock near the harbour light; the west side is preferred but shallower because the Kalymnos car ferry ('Olympios Zeus', 2+ sailings a day) spreads its lines at 45 degrees. Only a small part of the basin is not silted: stay close to the north quay and check Eagle Ray, Garmin or C-MAP before entering. Bad holding in dead weed and thin mud or sand. Shelter from SSE through NNE; SE storms are a problem and NE-E storms make it untenable. Water taps on the quay, no electricity (Sailing Issues, 2021 updates). mySea gives 2-4 m. Ashore: the fish taverna 'O Makis' in a backstreet; dolphins have been seen inside the port (October 2021); an early Christian basilica of St John is a 15-minute walk along the south-west coast.

Best for

Meltemi shelter and crew changes near the airport

Season

May–Oct; good in NW meltemi, avoid NE–E gales
