Marathounda Bay (Symi)

36° 34.0′ N · 27° 51.8′ E

A tight dogleg bay on Symi's narrow waist, with cheeky long-horned goats on the beach, a mojito bar and a taverna with its own moorings.

Practical

Sailing Issues: anchor at the head of the bay in 4–7 m over sand. The seabed rises steeply, so holding is mediocre; consider a line to the north shore (pin) or, in light conditions, the south shore. Violent gusts can come off the mountain. In winter a strong south wind sends dangerous waves onto the beach, so do not get caught inside. Grecosailor: anchored in 9 m with good holding; three buoys on the north side (two red for larger boats, one white); lines ashore on the south side; winds to 30 kn at night. Ashore: To Kyma bar and taverna north of the landing pier (superb mojitos). Taverna Marathounda in the south offers three permanent moorings for customers, tel +30 22460 71425 (mixed reports).

Best for

Taverna moorings and goats

Season

Gusty; avoid in strong southerlies (winter)
