Hike· Lemnos· Greece — Dodecanese, Sporades & North Aegean
Gomati Sand Dunes (Ammothines, Lemnos)
39° 59.5′ N · 25° 7.8′ E
About 70 stremmata (7 hectares) of wind-sculpted sand dunes with scattered scrub — Pachies Ammoudies, 'thick sands' — that bring the Sahara to the North Aegean and are unique in Greece.
Practical
Coordinate is the dune field in OpenStreetMap, on the slopes above Katalakkos village near Gomati beach (Visit Limnos). Walk up from Gomati Bay or drive from Myrina. Stay off fragile dune vegetation; no shade — go early or late. Nearby, the Faraklo geological park shows spherical lava-and-sandstone formations.
Best for
Desert-dune walk on a Greek island
