Lemnos Strong Winds (meltemi & winter gales)

39° 57.0′ N · 25° 12.0′ E · approximate

Lemnos is nicknamed 'Anemoessa', the wind-ridden one: the summer meltemi funnels down from the Dardanelles and Thrace, and winter brings gales from all quarters.

Practical

Coordinate is a representative central point (derived). Sailing Issues: strong winds especially in August and winter; in April expect N or S winds (and gales), with fine weather from May; Myrina is open to west winds that mainly blow in December–February. Wikipedia: the maximum average wind speed is in February. A 2026 cruiser account describes a sudden overnight gale in Myrina strong enough to damage a solar-panel frame, with mobile alerts and coast-guard warnings. North-coast anchorages (Gomati, Kotsinas, Saravari) are untenable in the meltemi — use Moudros Bay, Kontias or the west-coast bays then.
