Fakistra Sea Cave & Agios Athanasios Springs Snorkel (East Pelion)
39° 23.4′ N · 23° 11.7′ E · approximate
Snorkel the cliff-bound coast between Damouchari and Fakistra. Underwater springs at Agios Athanasios bay make the water noticeably change temperature, tiny bubbles rise in the sea caves, and Fakistra Cave has stalactites and stalagmites.
Practical
The position is approximate: just off the OpenStreetMap Fakistra beach. Agios Athanasios bay is not mapped; Activities Pelion's tour visits it between Damouchari and Fakistra. Heather on her Travels describes sea caves where tiny bubbles rise from underground springs. Activities Pelion supplies snorkel gear and life jackets on its tour, and this is the easiest way to find the spots. If you go by dinghy, pick a flat-calm morning: the coast is steep, rocky and open to NE swell, and surge inside caves is dangerous.
Best for
Snorkelling caves and freshwater springs on a flat-calm day
Season
Jun–Sep, flat calm only
