Kolona Anchorage & Sandbar (Kythnos)
37° 24.9′ N · 24° 22.6′ E
Kythnos's signature anchorage: a crescent sand isthmus joining the island to the islet of Agios Loukas, with turquoise water on both sides. It gets packed with Athenian yachts on summer weekends.
Practical
Anchor in the sandy patches. There is a lot of weed and the anchor does not always grip, so check it by diving (kythnos.gr, kythnos.net). Kolona, the bay on the west side of the sandbar, is well protected from westerly and southerly winds (kythnos.net). In the meltemi, move to Fikiada on the other side of the sandbar. It is very popular with motor cruisers from Athens on summer weekends, so arrive by midday. Kolona Experience restaurant is on the beach. 12knots reviewers report loud bar music in high season and an expensive restaurant of mixed quality. A 40 C hot-water fountain is mentioned by sailingissues. The coordinate is the OpenSeaMap anchorage symbol in Ormos Kolona.
