Agia Theodoti Bay (Ios)

36° 45.3′ N · 25° 19.7′ E

A long sandy beach on the north-east coast, with tamarisks, a taverna or two, and Ios's oldest church, the 16th-century Agia Theodoti, built on the ruins of a temple of Apollo.

Practical

Position from Grecosailor (36°45'15.3"N 25°19'44.6"E). Sand, rock and seagrass: aim for about 6 m, since it is weedy shallower and rocky deeper. Sailing Issues warns of black cables on the seabed, so use a tripline. Open to N and E: a calm or southerly-weather stop, not a meltemi anchorage. Ashore: Koukos taverna (Sailing Issues; it is in OSM a short way inland) and an organised section of beach with a canteen (Visit Ios). The Paleokastro ruins are on the hill to the south-east. Country fair of the Birth of the Virgin on 7-8 September.

Best for

Calm-day beach stop with a taverna

Season

Settled weather or southerlies; open to N and E
