Ios Chora & Windmills

36° 43.4′ N · 25° 17.1′ E

One of the most striking Cycladic capitals: a dazzling white maze of lanes and stepped passages climbing to the Panagia Gremiotissa church, with a ridge of old windmills on its eastern edge looking down on Mylopotas Bay.

Practical

Position is the Windmills viewpoint in OSM. The walk up from the port is about 2 km on a paved road and path; the municipal Route 5 links Chora, the port and Agia Irini. The windmills once ground the island's grain (Visit Ios Route 2). Just past them are the Odysseas Elytis open-air theatre, which seats about 1,000 and was designed by Peter Haupt, and the Gaitis–Simosi museum of white sculpted figures. Chora also holds the Archaeological Museum, banks, the Health Centre and the town hall. The lanes are pedestrian; go up for sunset and dinner. Local tradition says Ios has 365 churches (Visit Ios).
