Paleokastro (Ios)
36° 44.8′ N · 25° 20.7′ E
The ruins of a Venetian-Byzantine hilltop castle on Ios's north-east side. It once watched the sea routes to Crete and passed fire signals to Paros, Naxos and Amorgos.
Practical
Position is the OSM castle node. A short cobbled path leads to the top, where you see sections of wall, building ruins and the church of Panagia Paleokastritissa (Visit Ios). It is about 18 km by road from the port. Wikipedia describes it as a ruined 15th-century Venetian castle. The church's fair, on 7-8 September, is shared with Agia Theodoti. Best combined with a calm-day stop at Agia Theodoti Bay (Ios).
