Turipaoa Village Anchorage (Manihi)

14° 27.9′ S · 146° 2.2′ W

The anchorage about half a mile SE of Manihi's village of Turipaoa (also called Paeua), reached by following green markers from the pass; deep, with coral, but close to Fernando's bakery and the post office.

Practical

Position 14°27.89'S 146°02.19'W (Slipaway 2011); OCC gives 14°27.88'S 146°02.09'W (2015). Deep, about 50 ft (15 m+), coral bottom, water not very clear; float your chain. Slipaway's safe track from the cardinal mark: 14°27.401'S 146°03.382'W, 14°27.574'S 146°03.268'W, 14°27.770'S 146°02.953'W, then the anchorage; keep the green markers to starboard. Sea-seek also suggests sand in 5-6 m off Motu Tetarefa near the village in E-NE winds, and 8-10 m sand off the closed Manihi Pearl Beach hotel near the airport (exposed in E wind, awkward landing). Hanaha (2020) found no moorings near the village, despite Navionics; one near town was in under 1.8 m and in poor shape. Reach the village by dinghy or by walking across the reef. Some older charts (CM93) are offset here; check against satellite imagery.
