Manihi Pearl-Farm Anchoring Rules

14° 27.8′ S · 146° 3.0′ W

Manihi, where Polynesian pearl farming began in 1968, still has 27 pearl farmers working about 366 ha, grouped in the south and centre of the lagoon: keep to the marked route and anchor only on clear sand.

Practical

Position is Slipaway's 'Anchor 3' waypoint (14°27.770'S 146°02.953'W) on the marked route from the pass to the village anchorage; after the cardinal mark, keep the green markers to starboard (Slipaway, 2011). Farms are concentrated in the south and central lagoon, and the wildest, least-farmed area is the NE (sea-seek). The village anchorage is about 15 m deep with coral that snags anchors, so float your chain. Respect the regulated fishing zone in Tairapa Pass (arrêté 1421 CM 2017, renewed 2022). Ask at the mairie before anchoring near a concession, and arrange pearl-farm visits through your guesthouse or the tourism committee; visitors are welcomed at most farms (Tahiti Tourisme). Concession figures: 2024 atoll sheet (DRM, July 2024).
