Turipaoa Village and Shore-Road Walk or Bike (Manihi)

14° 27.7′ S · 146° 3.4′ W · approximate

Manihi's only road runs a few kilometres along the village motu, so the best way to see Turipaoa is on foot or by bike, past craft workshops, churches, the pass-side wharf and the reef flats.

Practical

Approximate: start point is the Tahiti Tourisme pin for Manihi Lodge near the darse, where you land the dinghy. Tahiti Tourisme: 'there are only a few kilometres of road' and the best way to see it is by bike or on foot, stopping at Turipaoa's craft workshops (hats, baskets, woven palm); the road runs along the shore for a few miles and can also be done by scooter or rented car. Manihi Lodge rents bicycles to guests and lists, as things to do, walking or cycling through the village and crossing the 'hoa' (reef channel) on foot 'as a sporting challenge' - only at low water and slack, with reef shoes. The 2024 atoll sheet counts 1 km of road, with 290 m newly concreted. Bring a hat and water; little shade on the ocean side. Anglers meet at the Tairapa Pass wharf in the evening or early morning.

Best for

A gentle shore walk or bike ride ashore
