Toau Southeast Corner Anchorage and Moorings

15° 57.2′ S · 145° 52.2′ W

A sand-and-bommie anchorage in 5 m tucked behind the wooded motus of Toau's SE corner, offering the best inside-the-lagoon shelter from E-SE trades. Five government moorings (installed Nov 2021) sit beside the anchoring spot.

Practical

Position 15°57.221'S 145°52.186'W, 5 m with scattered bommies; Sugar Shack held well with 40 m of chain and 4 floats (Nov 2021). Searching along the shore from the pass to the corner turned up no shallow spot free of bommies, so plan to float your chain. Jacaranda (2016) found the lagoon water clearer than Fakarava, with bottom visible past 50 ft, but kept watch for a few reefs on the way SE from the pass; travel in good light. Exposed in W-NW wind shifts. Moorings: Position is Sugar Shack's anchoring fix beside the moorings (15°57.221'S 145°52.186'W, Nov 2021); the exact buoy positions were not published. Five moorings were installed in early Nov 2021 with bright yellow floats and 1 in. line, rated to 18 m LOA. Sheltered from E and SE; exposed to W-NW. A No Foreign Land guide summary describes them as generally well maintained but says check the line before use, and some reports say a few have gone out of service, so availability is limited. No fee was reported. No services ashore.
