Toau Biosphere Reserve Rules (Fakarava Commune)

15° 54.9′ S · 146° 2.2′ W

Toau is one of the seven atolls of the commune of Fakarava, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, so Fakarava's yacht rules apply here even though there is no mairie or gendarmerie on the atoll.

Practical

Position is the OpenStreetMap atoll centroid. The official 2025 Fakarava yachtie brief lists the commune's atolls (Aratika, Fakarava, Kauehi, Niau, Raraka, Taiaro and Toau) and its rules: no lights under the boat at night; no campfires on land or motu; no pollution of the lagoon (waste, grey water, sunscreen); take only the fish you will eat; no illegal Airbnb or charter on passing yachts; no nudity at anchor, ashore or showering on deck. Anchor without damaging coral heads and use moorings where provided. Toau has about 14 residents (2017) and no services: the town hall for fees, trash and questions is in Rotoava, Fakarava, 15 nm away. Note: OpenStreetMap places the 'Maragai' village node at Anse Amyot, while sea-seek puts the old village of Maragai 2 nm north of Otugi Pass; both are used locally.
